Nigerians Abroad Seek Seats at the National Assembly

Seyi Oduyela

Professor Martin Okafor advised that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and President Musa Yar’Adua should recognize that the sustained vitality of any democratic nation depends on the enfranchisement of all eligible citizens in the national electoral process. He said this at the Nigerian Democratic Development Stakeholders Symposium held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Atlanta, USA on Tuesday, July 15.

According to the Professor of Physics, developing nations such as Brazil, The Philippines, India and Mexico have realized huge economic and technological gains in their national development efforts by forging deliberate engagement strategies, with adequate legislative support, to fully empower and enfranchise their citizens dispersed in the international communities. He cited the French government as an example, where seat are set aside in their parliament for French citizens residing outside France.

“It is critical to support the efforts of the Diaspora organizations to establish necessary platforms for engaging fellow Nigerians in the political, social and economic development,’ he said.

Professor Okafor said that the All Nigeria American Congress (ANAC), a conglomerate organization of Nigerian Organizations and peoples of Nigerian origin passed a Bill in 2005 to establish a vote for Presidency for Nigerians in North America and the international community, along with three senatorial and nine seats at the House of Representatives for Nigerians in North America and the international community. This, according to him, is ANAC Bill ( a.k.a. ANAC Resolution 101). He said the Bill has been presented to some Nigerian Senators sponsorship.

He advised hat the executive and legislative branches should establish appropriate policy framework that assures the full enfranchisement of Nigerian citizens residing in the international community in national electoral and legislative processes through appropriate legislative actions.
